Happy Birthday Android!!!!!
On Friday, the android completed its 14th year. The
first android was launched on Sep 23rd, 2008, by Andrew E. Rubin (an American
computer programmer, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist). HTC Dream (G1) was
the first phone with Android1.0. From the HTC Dream (G1) to date, we have seen
a lot of changes in android from time to time. Let’s have a look at some
changes which were not there in android 1.0 but are common these days:
- The first version of Android didn't support on-screen keyboard.
Did you know that earlier touchscreens were never
in the minds of Android designers? Today, we have huge collections of Android
keyboards for granted, but in the 2000s we only had physical keyboards and
thumbpads. Nothing like a virtual keyboard existed at that time. Likewise, HTC
Dream (G1) also comes up with a physical keypad. But with time, physical
keypads were replaced by virtual keyboards.
- Android entered the market with only 13 apps and
nothing like app monetization.
As of today, Android contains various
applications you can just think of. But at the time of launch, it only had
thirteen apps and no choice for monetization. With time, Android realized its
mistake and in 2009 it introduced the support of paid apps from then it just
changed all the dimensions for the Android & now we have tons of
applications available in the play store.
- The first version of Android only supports taking
still photos.
Today we have the best camera smartphones, which
contain high-end camera specifications like 8K video capture, Dolby Vision,
etc. Earlier, that was not the case. The beginning of smartphone cameras was
not very magnificent. We only had the support of taking still pictures. Have a
look at your smartphone cameras and think about how far we have come from the
beginning.
- The first version of Android was launched without
widget support.
Customization is a key factor in Android’s
ecosystem. Do you know that these did not come from the very beginning? Android
widget features were introduced in Android 1.5. Swipe down to toggle things
like notification bar, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more features were first launched
in version 4.2, known as Jellybean.
- The first aim of Android was to compete with
Blackberry.
Android’s plan during the launch was to compete with Blackberry. Now look where Android has left Blackberry in terms of competition. In the present situation, there is no comparison between Android and Blackberry although Blackberry was a giant in its time.
Do you remember any specific features which
were not part of android in the very beginning, but today you can’t imagine
android without that feature? Let us know in the comments section we will be waiting
for your immediate response.
